View Full Version : Will Southern teams dominate again?

Some of you may remember me (YHM) and I must say it's great to be back! I've been away from the board for a while now. Maybe celebrating a bit too much from the SEC's domination of college sports for the 06-07 school year, or another year of Southern football teams running wild on the rest of the great US of A football landscape. Both Division 1 champions from the South- Florida and Appalachian State. Is anyone in Ann Arbor a little bit nervous that a lil ole 1-AA App State team just might make that game competitive?

Anyhow, another glorious season is upon us. And, if recent history means anything, another Southern team will probably win it all (even if it should be a playoff) in the BCS format- 98 Tennessee, 99 FSU, 01 Miami, 03 LSU, 05 Texas, 06 Florida. 6 out of 9 "Championships" coming home to the good ole South! Well, maybe LSU is the team to do it this year. But my guess is a dark horse. Maybe its just something about Clemson that tells me this is the year they put it together. Or maybe Nick Saban has a sleeping giant at Bama. Or could Spurrier shock the world at the REAL USC (last time the Trojans and Gamecocks met, South Carolina won, so they own "USC" until it's taken back from them!). But, of course, not matter which Southern team wins it, or if Michigan wins it, or Texas, or anyone else, we'll probably get the same answer from most of the rest of the country.......It should've been USC because despite their loss or two they were the best team in the country!

What should have been USC?

He is saying that when USC ends the season with two losses we will hear the same old "They were the best team and would have won it all in a playoff"

What's with the name change ?.....I know, the CSU 'Bucs'. I'll try to get used to that. Anyway, glad you're back for more fun and still full of Southern baloney ;-)

Did you ever answer that question I've been asking you for years ???.... What would happen to Southern CF if a bare minimum IQ of 100 was required for player eligibility ?

you think guys playing at most midwestern or Great Plains schools are geniuses? you could make the same argument at schools all over, not just in the south.

you want a darkhorse? how bout Rutgers...once they start getting some more talent, they're going to consistently be a top 10 team

I also like LSU because of their schedule...no Georgia or Tennessee...plus they get South Carolina, Florida, Auburn, and Arkansas at home...

so anyways, thats my pick for the National Championship...LSU over Rutgers

Agree, Jeff. Dumbth is everywhere...but in general, very general, the Southeast leads the way in marginal academics. For example, here are the last team average SAT qualifying scores as published by the NCAA . The bottom 10 :

E.Carolina.....860.8
Fresno St.....868.3
Arkansas......870.2
Louisville......872.0
La-Monroe....873.5
Tennessee....879.0
Va Tech.......881.0
Marshall.......885.9
La Tech.......888.4
LSU............889.7
Florida.........892.7

Do you see a Southern flavor here ? Also, by conference, the SEC is dead last ( by a mile !!!)

You've really become aware of Rutgers after seeing them in that PSEG, right ?

I assume you're responding to me...

Rutgers is the real deal...Louisville and West Virginia have some great players on good teams, but Rutgers had average talent on a great team...

Schiano has created a hard-working team that believes in itself...once they start getting some talent in the lineup, they're going to go off the chart...remember, they beat Louisville last year, and almost beat West Virginia and ended up in the BCS...this year, they bring back key players and have an extremely easy schedule

Going in to the season, this team reminds me alot of Oklahoma 2000

Hokiehen, you said "Did you ever answer that question I've been asking you for years ???.... What would happen to Southern CF if a bare minimum IQ of 100 was required for player eligibility ?"

Well, many schools outside the South would have fewer star players, such as Southern products John David Booty, Marshall Faulk, Mike Williams, well, I could go on a huge list of Southern stars who went West...and North.

Yeah, and it's great to be back. I changed YHM to Bucs90 not for CSU, but because I became a Tampa Bay Bucs fan in 1990. Lame, I know, but a new board, new name, new season, ya know? Looking forward to a great year- sure you and I are in for some good debates!

I realize that since my advanced Honors calculus with an emphasis on theory was at a big dumb Southern school that my counting can't be trusted, but it sure looks like you listed 11 schools, and not 10 as you described. I know you live in the South now, BH, but were you "educated" down here with the rest of us dumbasses? Or is it just rubbing off in adulthood?

I'm sure that Hen was educated at a Big Ten schools since WE don't realize there are 11 schools but insist that the name Big Ten remain. Of course I always said that the Big Ten starts with zero so it works out...

0 Northwestern
1 Ohio State
2 Penn State
3 Michigan
4 Illinois
5 Minnesota
6 Michigan State
7 Iowa
8 Illinois
9 Wisconsin
10 Indiana

I had to slip #11 in there, NCT, because it was Florida. Shame on me. It wasn't bad counting....just a little sneaky . Nothing wrong with the Southern Universities. They're fine. The scholarship FB players, collectively, are just the dumbest...that's`all.

I don't know if it's available on line, Don , but you can try the NCAA site > publications > research > grad rate reports. I got those reports in hard copy. The last admissions data was published in 1998. It's a 637 page book with admissions data for every D1 school and every sport that offers athletic scholarships.

I'll be glad to share any school/sports's numbers with you or the conference averages.

I would have never guessed it was for TB. Are you still affiliated with Charleston Southern ?
Yeah boy....I'm ready to go on the Southern superiority thing :)

Wasn't it you that attended the KSU/Rutgers Texas Bowl ? It was somebody on this board......thought it might have been you, Evil.
