Highest Ranked Opponent Defeated

Influenced by a discussion on SOS on another board, I wanted know the highest ranked opponent defeated by each position in the national standings in any year since 1978. These results are based on my system. The first column lists all possible rankings since 1978 (1-139) and the second lists the highest ranked opponent defeated by any team that finished with that ranking. For example, the highest ranked opponent defeated by a #1 team is a #2 team.

When Temple upset Virginia Tech (at Virginia Tech!) a few years ago it was the biggest upset of that season in my opinion.

More than a few years back..1998. Yeah, the hokies beat Clemson, Miami, Pitt, BC, WVU, and completely toyed with Alabama in a PSEG..the same Bama that went on to win the SEC championship the following season....yet drops the ball against Temple. You never know in this CF. Gotta focus every week.

I honestly can not think of a bigger upset in the last 10 years than that Temple win at Virginia Tech. I believe that was Temple's first win of the season. I think the Owls might have won 2 games that year but the other was not against a team like Virginia Tech. That one caught everyone by surprise.

Temple only won 2 games that season, beating VT and Pitt !! ...each on the road !! One of Temple's 1998 losses was to William & Mary. Very screwy !!
