Following the 2008 season, the sixth-place team will play against a Western Athletic Conference school in the Hawaii Bowl and the seventh-place team will face a Mountain West Conference opponent in the Poinsettia Bowl.

So? They stay on the west coast and play other teams in the area. Bowls are all about money and Pac-10 fans apparently do not travel well to bowls located on the other side of the country. Of course, maybe their fans should be embarrassed for not spending thousands to attend a glorified consolation game another sixth or seventh place team from a BCS conference. Then again, maybe not.

The realities of the Post Season Exhibition Game business/entertainment 'system'. Don't trash the P10 for its location.

Which is why I don't value "bowl records" all too much when evaluating strength of a conference. You have to also look at the matchups. Not to mention these games are played a month after the season so you never know how prepared to play some teams might be. Then there's the NFL factor with the top kids looking out for themselves, wanting to run up their own stats to impress scouts, or trying to avoid potential injury. Yes, bowl games are pretty much exibitions. Bowl games and OOC games are all for fun and money. It's all about CONFERENCE RACES, people! Also, because of its implications, MNC games likely would provide the most accurate data because the game means something and you assume that most of the kids are "trying to win" more than the other games. But even MNC games have their flaws. I also take regular season OOC game results more seriously than regular bowl games for similar reasons.

Seems like these types of bowls come and go, year after year. I suspect these two will not last either.

Got to wonder if a Pac-10 team that finishes 7th in a ten team conference will consistently have enough wins to even qualify for post season. If the two bowls had existed in 2006, 7-6 (4-5) Arizona State finished 6th, and 6-6 (4-5) Washington State finshed 7th.

The PAC 10 is certainly at a disadvantage when it comes to bowls. All other BCS Conferences and most bowl sites are east of the Rockies. And most BCS schools are closer to the east coast than the west coast. PAC 10 schools aren't known to have the best traveling fan bases either. Unless their team is playing in the Rose Bowl, or another BCS Bowl, they just don't seem to "care" as much from what I have seen.

True story - P10 fans don't 'travel' well....in general.

My gang of four go to almost every USC game, home and away, good season or bad, and love doing it. We've been to stadiums all over the country and every stop in the Pac-10 several times . . . South Bend every other year. Great fun.

But, as noted above, many Pac-10 fans make other choices---Fans of Stanford and Cal play with their computers, guys in the Pacific Northwest go fishing, guys in Arizona drink beer, and UCLA fans watch porno.

P.S. Guess the driving force behind these two "new" bowls is the revitalized Versus Network, which has replaced TBN (Turner) for college football games this season. Been a lot of angst among Pac-10 and Big 12 fans, because in the past the Versus Network (Vs) was mostly known for bull riding, fly fishing, etc. However, the other night I watched their coverage of the Tour de France and it was pretty impressive . . . So, it will be interesting to see just how good or bad a job Vs does in college football.

P.P.S. Really liked Clive Davis' work on TBN and hoped he'd move to Vs . . . But, I hear he got picked up by Fox Sports Network, which is even better.
