Why does everyone fall for this team every year? I thought it was crazy when a few weeks back several "experts" were chirping that Va Tech was the best 1 loss team and still had a good chance at getting to the title game. Outside of getting to the title game in 99, what has this team accomplished this decade?

Nine and Ten win seasons, most years. Lot of Husker and Seminole fans wish they had even that level of performance again.

10 wins for 6 straight years. Only USC and Texas have done better.

I never thought this VT was really NC caliber, but for a brief moment when they crushed Miami and Boston College, there was a flicker of hope. The fact is, that VT has had All-American defensive backs as a constant in the defense for about the last decade. They don't have that this year, and it's showing.

And Tyrod Taylor isn't consistent enough to lead this team to a Top 5 level.

One of the strongest and most consistent programs in college football. Their year to year strenght and consistency on defense and special teams is unmatched. With a bit more steady play on offense, they'd have 1-2 NC rings in the last decade.

VT seems to be a trendy pick alot but in reality, a little overrated. The Hokies are good buit those lofty ratings never make much sense to me either.

Sorry, I was off by 1 year. I might have been projecting.

But their streak of at least 10 wins per year for the past 5 years is still only exceeded by USC and Texas.

And they've had at least 10 wins in 8 out of the last 10 years. Very few teams can claim that consistency. Which was the point of the response to the question "What have they done in the past 10 years"

No ratings make sense to you.

However, VT's ratings are rarely that lofty. They are typically in the 12-18 range at the beginning of the season, and they typically end in the 12-18 rating at the end of the season. So they really aren't that overrated at all.

But the blowouts of Miami and Boston College were impressive, at it was easy to believe that this team was putting all the pieces together. Sadly, they haven't quite done that.

Now, this season could spiral out of control as the 2003 season did, or they can right the ship and win the rest of their games. If they do, they'll likely where they frequently do, in the range of 15.

Guys, not to get all sentimental or anything, but remember how football coaches always said football mimics life, and vice versa? Going through a personal situation right now, and it's just funny how things can be on top of the world, everything working right, and then just a few unforseen circumstances can set off a spiral that leads to it all falling apart. So many times in mine and other people's lives I've seen that football analogy of where something so great coulda been, but a couple miscues or just plain old luck prevented it from happening, and there ain't nothing that can really change it. Kinda where VT is now. IMO, they have usually had a team that is strong enough on defense and spec teams to be a NC contender. Just a couple bad luck plays, mishaps, etc. Thats why I think football is so imporant to young people. It teaches a person how to handle adversity and keep moving forward. I find myself looking back to lessons I learned as a player in high school and college about how to get through tough times a lot. Right now is one. For all the hoopla and criticism and hype that surrounds college football, I think the true most important and valuable thing is the life lessons these 18-22 year old kids are learning that they will be referring back to in their 20's, 30's, 40's and beyond. The W's and L's will soon not mean nearly as much as those lessons.
