Throughout history you will see that Afghanistan has nver been conquered and its people never, ever give up.
So it is now, and will be.
Kipling penned a nice verse:
"When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains,
"And the women come out to cut up what remains,
"Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
"An' go to your Gawd like a soldier."
They have nowhere else to go, we do, and probably should and will , at some point.

We are here because this is where the 9-11 attack was planned and launched from, with support of the Taliban gov't at the time. We supported the opposition to overthrow the Taliban gov't and are there to prevent the Taliban from doing the same and again launch attacks against us.

Another reason why our troops are anywhere other than inside our borders is because they are no jobs for the troops when they come home unless we put them to work inspecting ships and physically sealing our borders. The unemployment rate would double or triple if we brought them home and McCain deserves credit for basically saying the same thing during his Presidential campaign.
But I must add that if you are going to go to war then for crying out loud go to war to win. We're not doing much except putting band-aids on a gushing artery and losign men at the same time. We do not plan on winning but containing. All this does is allow the other guy to evolve new means and methods and modify their tactics constinuing to kill Americans and other Afghans in a nickel and dime manner. It will go on and on. They will not give up. Destroying the poppy fields woudl deliver a severe hammer to the Afghans in general. I think our governmetn's view on this "nation building" effort is that if you destroy their "crops" you add detrement to their country (a necessary evil?).
We will eventually cease with this venture as the 2012 elections arrive. That way Obama can say they left Afghanistan and we'll probably be pretty much out of Iraq as well. We shouldn't sacrifice our young men and women by expecting them to wear targets and act as little more than policemen to protect people who will not defend themselves.
One soultion is to go nuclear back here at home and start drilling and get more into our natural gas and coal. But some pussy who thinks a rodent is more justified in maintaining his hole in the ground then our taking care of the human species is in the driver's seat at present. I think we should ship them off to the badlands of the interior of Australia. Let the scorpions, human attacking spiders and crocs deal with these nature loving morons.

Of course, the purists in those realms are useful village idiots. I think we ought to send Van Jones and Mark Lloyd over as their chiefs or medicine men as well. Lets see if communism works on the wildlife.

HTVV?? Are you off your meds again? There are at least 14.5 MILLION people unemployed right now. Are you suggesting that we have 30-45 MILLION in the armed forces? Wow... we should be winning more.

It's a fair question. We WENT there for a reason: To end the rule of a government that was sponsoring and supporting terrorist (Same reason we went into Iraq, BTW). That part of our mission was accomplished. Now, we're there trying to defend the government we put in it's place.
I'm not sure "winning" is really an option in Afghanistan. It's not the same kind of place as Iraq. I do think we should re-examine our goals there. We have our air base... that's what we really want. The only other thing I want is for Al-Qaida to NOT have a place to operate and organize freely. Maybe, it would be better to let others fight over that awful land, and we just take out Al-Qaida types whenever and wherever we see them?

if our GD administration isn't going to use troop as they were intended in Afghanistan/Iraq then we ought to bring more home as we're actually being invaded here in this country. But, of course, it is by invitation - compliments of the Bush and Obama administration with freebies for all except for those of us who actually pay for all of this shit.

except that all of those military types are on Obama's list of potential terrorists. Afterall they are armed, trained and not really appreciated by our elitist ruling class (unless the rulers are being attacked and then w'll here a rah! rah! for our troops like on 9/12/2001 - for a while anyway). Our federal government disgusts me.

There was a time when I thought joining up was a good thing for young people.
Now, I don't.
I fear our young are being used more than serving.
I don't think there is any appreciation for our service men in our Government today.(in fact the OBama people have made it very clear they view our soldiers as terrorists)
Jim, I am disgusted as well.
Here is how I feel about the Government... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26irW7yMJXk&feature=related

Modern terrorism doesn't wear a uniform, or call any nation "home". Terrorism is fought in the mind as much as on the ground. The question is how badly do we want to fight it? How far are we willing to go? Obama is prosecuting CIA personnel for going to extreme measures. Remember. There is no emperor to sign a surrender. No fort or beach to take. No blitzkreig to halt. Our kinder gentler ways won't work. Our traditional warfighting will kill many, but others sprought up.
Seal the borderS (plural).
Interrogate harshly those we catch.
Kill those who won't be caught.
IMO, thats the only way to win it, in that order. Yet, we've failed on the border so all else doesn't matter.
