Which 5 div-1a teams have never played a div-1aa team since div-1aa was started in 1977?

USC, UCLA, Washington, Notre Dame, and Michigan State? I think Michigan and Ohio State play I-AA opps for the first time this coming year.

Good call. Notice that each of these teams has won a MNC, hence you don't have to schedule div-1aa and directional schools to win!! Also notice that the schools are from the class connferences, the PX and the BigX, and the top independent.

Just curious...who do you think is more competitive....Appalachian State, or Idaho?

Appalachian st, a div-1aa school, had an outstanding year last year and was undoubtably better than Idaho was in 2006. And according to Sagarin they were better than 1/3 of the teams in the SEC! (Miss St., Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and Alabama). I know you were noticing that Idaho is on the USC schedule and were trying to develop some kind of comparison. USC scheduled Idaho in 2003 as a favor to their new coach, Nick Holt who had been the USC LB coach in 2001 and 2002--Nick is a long time friend of Pete Carroll. Well to make a long story short Holt left Idaho in 2005 to take a job with the St Louis Rams but Pete intercepted Holt on the was to Missouri and brought him back to the Trojans as DC. Hence you don't need to have Idaho on your schedule. If you have followed my recent posts you know I have alluded to the SEC ducking USC, the Idaho game is the focal point for that ducking. I believe 4 or 5 of the top SEC teams were contacted for potential Home and Homes with USC starting with the Idaho slot in L.A. in 2007 and an away game in 2010 in SEC country. Idaho had given USC permission to drop them(some $$$ also involved) but if we can't schedule top dogs why drop Idaho for an available New Mexico st? So thats why we got Idaho.

the only ducking I see is you ducking the question

if Appalachian State is just as good as Idaho, who cares about the IAA label?

Well how about that on average div-1aa teams are much worse tha div-1a, that is why the divisions were seperated in 1977! Look at the Sagarin ratings. you may have the occasional outlier such as App St or N. Dak but on balance div-1aa discribes an inferior team. Any more questions?

Because the ceiling is much higher for all I-A teams. On top of that, if you limit I-A teams to I-A opponents, there are only so many Idahos to go around. I seriously doubt I-A teams are playing 80 plus I-AA opponents this year becasue such opponents challenge them more than Idaho. Schedule any I-AA opponent four years out and you know you are still getting an easy win if you are a winning I-A team. Schedule Idaho four years out and you might get what Boise State has become. These games are all about money and serve no competitive purpose.

The competitive purpose is to fine tune your team and gain experience.

That is what exhibition games are for and I wouldn't call that a "competitive" purpose either. College football has 12 games to narrow 119 teams down 2 (actually 66 down to 2) and it makes no sense to waste one game on a guaranteed win. Besides that, some of these games occur later in the season. I doubt Florida needed to gain experience by playing Western Carolina in Oct. or Nov. 119 teams playing 12 games versus each other only while governed by rules that would encourage, if not demand, teams schedule winners would do wonders for this sport.

thats not what I'm suggesting...

The point I have is there is no real distinction between the bottom of IA and the top of IAA...its a nebulous grey area, so who cares?

Idaho is a IAA school disguised as IA...their stadium is the kibbie dome, which holds 16,000...this might be the smallest stadium in all of IA...

I just don't see what the problem with scheduling IAA teams is

Easily the smallest stadium.

There's little to no difference between scheduling 50% of the mid-majors out there and I-AA teams. The only real difference is that the mid-majors might be better than you think, but 'a cupcake is a cupcake' is not far off.

There are 45 I-AA teams with larger stadiums than Idaho and 6 division II teams

Besides the fact that 50% of mid-majors only equals a pool of 27 such teams compared to almost 150 such teams with I-AA opponents included, I think there is a potentially significant difference when games are scheduled years in advance. Except for a few newbies, I suspect that every program has a had a team during its I-A years that was much more dangerous than any I-AA opponent could ever be. Even then, I'm not calling for Appalachian State to be replaced with Idaho. Since teams like Bosie State are expected to do more in OOC action than any team has ever likely done or any a nonBCS conference has accomplished as a whole, it would seem the system should, at the least, encourage strong BCS teams to schedule strong nonBCS teams. However, as it stands, there is no discernible difference under the BCS between a win versus a good nonBCS team and a bad one or even a I-AA team.

Nice having a CAA guy around. So who do you forsee competing for the league FB championship this season? They're getting a little nervous in Newark, Del. Time for KC Keeler's Blue Hens to show more strength.
