View Full Version : Heading up to Boston to watch Xavier...
Play Pitt tomorrow and hopefully Nova or Duke on Saturday. Looking forward to having a little chowder and watching some exciting basketball over the next several days. I get to bring along my wife (a good thing since her birthday is Saturday) so we'll have a little mini-getaway as well. Anybody else going to make these games?
I think X can pull the upset if the Xavier post men can draw a few charges and offensive fouls on Blair - Love is pretty good at taking the charge and with Freese on the bench, X will be able to use 10 fouls on Blair. I don't think many of the 'experts' give them a chance and if the Xavier guards have an off night we're dead but if Jackson continue's to play as well as he has the first two tourney games, I like the Muskies chances. Next report will be from Boston!
Go Muskies.

Close....the story of the tourney this year. The small schools have pushed many of the big schools to the limit, but unlike past years, they have not been able to get that bounce, miss, big shot, turnover at the end of the game...
As it is, heading into Friday night, on Cinderella is left....Arizona? Hard to picture a team that won the title a few years ago as a Cinderella but, they are a #12 seed.
Missouri get 102 vs Memphis and 190+ points in a regulation game, but I never felt like this game was a track meet. Mizzou got to 100 because they had like 25 free throws in the last 2:30.....

If Michigan defeats Air Force this afternoon, I am taking the drive to Bridgeport Connecticut and watching them play in the East Regional Final likely against the regional host and nearby Yale.

AFA wins its first NCAA tourney game in school history, 2-0. This is their third time the NCAA tourney.

Nice win. Your goalie stopped 43 shots and with Vermont upsetting Yale, Air Force could be headed to the Frozen Four.
What an unbelieveable end to the UNH/North Dakota game - UNH tied the game with .03 of a second remaining and won in the first 2 minutes of OT. i also watched the longest college lacrosse game in history as Virginia beat Maryland in 7 OT's. The Buckeyes were simply overmatched vs BU in their hockey match.
As for the Musketeers, if Derrick Brow wears a size smaller shoe, I think Xavier goes on to beat Pitt. That's how close the game was. But Xavier has clearly shown that they can play with any team in the country and next year they should be loaded - it might be their best team in history.

mulitple questions ...take a stab at all or a few....
1. today is the 24th anniversary of villanova's shocking upset over goergetown. in the second half, villanova did something as a team never done before in the final 4 and never since...what was it?
2. kind of sad that the great one, john wooden, now 98 years old and recently recovered from a serious case of pneumonia, hasnt been mentioned in the tourney really at all..some will recall wooden going out with a final title in 1975 with a hard fought victory over kentucky in an excellent final. but he wouldnt have gotten there as against a very good louisville team in the semis soemthing unusual happened late in that game which allowed ucla to win a tight one in the last seconds..what was it?
3. we all know the tale of texas western ( i.. utep's) win over kentucky in 1966. but the miners were very lucky to get to the final 4 at all. what happened in the last seconds of their regional final win that year that was maybe luck...maybe fate... that got them there.
4. what is the lowest scoring half for any team in the final 4 in the last 50 years? who was the opponent that shut down the losing team?
5. what is the tallest front line ( i,e, center, forward, forward) to start in a final 4 in the past 40 years?. ironically the losing opponent in the final 4 game fielded the shortest front line since then? who were they???

1. I'd say the answer is shoot 90% for a half - I believe they were 9 of 10 from the field and Georgetown still only lost by 2.
2. I'm not sure if it was this Final Four or one a few years earlier but Lousiville had a player who shot 100% from the foul line during the season who missed the front end of a one and one that could have won the game for the Cardinals. UCLA was able to win the game as a result and beat UK in the championship game.
3. I'm too young to recall that Texas Western team and I didn't see the recent movie!
4. I'm going to say Penn in 1979. I remember Michigan State was beating them by 30 points at halftime.
5. Jacksonville in 1970 had a couple 7 footers so I'll say them. They beat New Mexico State.

The only answer I know is the #1, and I agree.
I think they shot 79% for the game, and only won by 2.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is fate.

Lot may think Phi-Slamma-Jamma from 83-84 but Olyjawon was the only 7 footer. Drexler and Michou weren't particularly tall. Reid Getties was a lanky guard, though and does Big 12 bball color now.
