How can Ole Miss have 38 guys in a class? I know early enrollees count towards the previous year, but 38 is near half of their allotted total. They need to average about 16 guys a class the next couple years. But they'll likely have 25-30 guys again next year.
And how about Alabama. They signed 32 guys last year and 28 guys this year. That only leaves 25 more scholarships. 25!!!!!
Something smells fishy.

Hen would be proud. IF you are recruiting players that marginal academically, you play the stats game. Recruit 38 guys knowing that only 24 will make the mimimum grades required. The others are shuffled off to a "prep" school. Some will make it through and qualify next year.
OOPS the title should be "called" not "xalled"! ;)

Don beat me to it. The answer to your question, LT, is the DUMBTH factor. Generally, you'll find more of that oversigning in the SEC than anywhere else.

Some teams "oversign" by a guy or 2, and then have to "grayshirt" a guy or two. Lots of schools do that (wouldnt surprise me if some SAC schools did that).
But how can these numbers be so, so, so out of whack?
And why dont other teams try this method? If I am a head coach, I'll sign 30 and keep the top 20 every year. Makes easier than trying to guess which 20 will make it beforehand.

Notice the signing classes of the SAC schools. Their recruits can read, write and count to 10...........don't need 38 a year.

Maybe that's their problem. They can count to 10, but they are allowed 20 recruits per year. They might be more successful if they recruited their full allotment.

Florida signed only 16 this year :)

It's 25 per year, isn't it ?

I don't know. I can only count to 20

It is 25, but if a recruit enrolls for spring practice, he can be counted as part of last seasons class (even though he doesn't use a year of eligibility).

You can get into big trouble by signing 38 guys that actually qualify. But, if you sign 38 guys but only 25 actually qualify by NCAA standards you're in the clear (not the Barry Bonds type "clear" but NCAA "clear" ;) ).
My guess is that Mullen wants "fast" players so he recruits lots of "fast" but perhaps not bright players in the hopes that enough will qualify academically to meet his needs.
Troy has signed (by my count on scouts.com) 92 players over the past 3 years. It clearly ISN'T just the football factories that are over recruiting.

Troy does sign a lot of JUCO guys, IIRC, so some of them are out of the program in 2 years.
