did you read any article pertaining to why he was fired??? that should answer you're question...
Owner Dean Spanos: "When I decided to move ahead with Marty Schottenheimer in mid-January, I did so with the expectation that the core of his fine coaching staff would remain intact. Unfortunately, that did not prove to be the case and the process of dealing with these coaching changes convinced me that we simply could not move forward with such dysfunction between our head coach and general manager. In short, this entire process over the last month convinced me beyond any doubt that I had to act to change this untenable situation and create an environment where everyone at Charger Park would be pulling in the same direction and working at a championship level. I expect exactly that from our entire Charger organization in 2007."

Definetely not a fair situation for Schott. Both coordinators were promoted to HC jobs, and several assistants got coordinator jobs. You can't blame him for other guys wanting to climb the ladder. The fact that he had dysfunction with the GM is another story....

These changes might keep them away from playing in the Superbowl for another year or two. No team adjusts that quickly and when you get closer to the Superbowl game, constant scrutiny is difficult to manage when personal bonds between and among players and coaches is relatively new. They are human after all. The Bengals might be primed for a championship year however if they can overcome their legal troubles.

you forgot this part:
"I was severly disappointed in the fact that our organization had blown a chance at a super bowl, and well, I gave into all the 'Schotty coaches poorly in the playoffs hype'"

Tampa Bay won the super bowl with Gruden the very year after they canned Tony Dungy...but generally I agree with you...
The NFL is too corporate for my tastes...

One and Done in the playoffs will get you fired real quick.

sheesh... maybe Oklahoma should fire Bob Stoops for two losses in the regular season too, with a loss in the postseason!
It's no wonder I don't care for the NFL (Not For Long).
...but you have to assess the situation objectively. Despite that great record, SD got bounced at home in their 1st playoff game. The only man left in charge cannot get along with his boss and has a zero track record in advancing deep into the playoffs. The dismissal was probably the right move.

A recent LA Times article made it sound like it was about coaching personel and lining up possible successors for the aging Shot. One of the Asst HC, Wade Phillips, was being groomed to replace him but he and the other Asst HC got HC jobs this year. Upper management was mad that Shot gave permission for the next level assistants to be interviewed by other teams. They left leaving no clear in house successors. Marty refused to interview the assistants management wanted and instead wanted to hire his brother. That led to the GM and HC not talking and eventually his firing. In the end it was dysfunctional management team that could not communicate.
In a somewhat related matter, USC coach Pete Carroll is not expected anytime soon in SD. After his prior HC experience in the NFL, Carroll is insisting on complete personel control of any NFL team he joins. That would obviously not happen in SD.
