View Full Version : BCS, bowls, and inclusion

If the BCS wants to claim inclusion (without creating a playoff system, if you're arguing for a playoff, use the other thread), then they need to include all the conference champs

Here are some thoughts on adding a couple bowls to the BCS picture to include all conference champs

Fiesta Bowl and the Mountain West
The MWC is growing and getting better every year...BYU is a BCS program basically (compare their football attendance to alot of BCS programs)

The MWC should have an autobid, and the Fiesta Bowl should be their anchor bowl...maybe the MWC could grab a couple of WAC teams like Boise State and Fresno State

Cotton Bowl and the Big XII
The Cotton Bowl deserves to be one of the BCS bowls...it has as much history as the four major BCS bowls...and the Big XII should be the anchor

Liberty Bowl and C-USA
If you moved the date to Dec 31 and let them select an At-Large after the major bowls, then I think you could have C-USA and the Liberty Bowl as part of the BCS

The hard part with this is that alot of the At-large picks might actually have better match-ups in their conference bowl line-up

Tangerine Bowl and the MAC & Sun Belt
Currently the Sun Belt champ goes to the New Orleans bowl, and the MAC champ goes to the Motor City bowl...this sucks

Central Michigan had a pretty decent team last year, won the MAC, and was rewarded with playing Middle Tennessee State, whom they beat 31-14

Troy, the Sun Belt champ, beat C-USA also-ran Rice 41-17

If the BCS included both the MAC and Sun Belt champs and had them play each other in a bowl with a BCS label on Dec 31, then I think it would be much more successful for both conferences

Houston Bowl
The stadium in Houston could be used as an alternative to the Tangerine or Liberty Bowl if they didn't go for the idea...the stadium in Houston is one of the best in the country

The WAC
The Western Athletic Conference...its an odd fit for the BCS, as you've got programs like Fresno State and Boise mixed in with Sun Belt quality programs like New Mexico State and Utah State

It would be great if you could merge the top half of this conference with the MWC somehow, but I suppose you could match them against C-USA or have them as a floating bid, like the Big East

Right now the WAC Champ usually goes to the Humanitarian Bowl, except last year when Boise State qualified for a BCS bowl

==========================================
Here is an overall picture of how this might look for last year (of course it would depend alot of rotation of selection):

Dec 31
Tangerine: Central Michigan vs. Troy
Liberty: Houston vs. Virginia Tech

Jan 1-4
Cotton: Oklahoma vs. Boise State
Orange: Louisville vs. Wake Forest
Sugar: LSU vs. Notre Dame
Rose: USC vs. Michigan
Fiesta: BYU vs. West Virginia

Jan 8
BCS Championship: Florida vs. Ohio State

By the way, the BCS has all the conferences on its website, maybe it should actually include them in the bowls

huh ??

I'll put it in your terms....the BCS should give the champs of the Sun Belt, MAC, WAC, C-USA, and the MWC consolation games...All conferences should be included

:D

Cmon Hen, is this really that hard to follow?

Just updating this idea...

If the BCS goes ahead with the +1 idea, maybe they could bring the Liberty bowl up to BCS status and match the top two non-BCS champs when non-BCS teams don't qualify....for example:

This would give more recognition to some of the better non-BCS champs

I turned 60 in March. Everything is getting hard to follow....you'll see.
