any wonder why ? let me count the ways::

2-10-1 vs Michigan
3-8 in bowl games
5-19-2 in last 2 games of the year, that oughta close this case.

IMO, Cooper was a good HC but his conservative ideology of playing 'not to lose' rather than playing agressively 'to win', kept him from greatness. LLoyd Carr ....about the same thing.

98 was by far his best team, and he beat Michigan and TxAM in the Sugar Bowl, but lost a weird one to .500 MSU team. He never really recovered from that year.

He had a player with a 0.00 GPA and had 2 players suing each other over a fight during practice in the subsequent years.

It's not that he didn't have an eye for talent. He recruited every starter for the '02 MNC game save Maurice Clarett, Dustin Fox, Rob Sims and Chris Gamble.

A good coach that was "this close" to being a really good one.

Let's see Duck. He turned around 3 programs. Tulsa, Arizona State and Ohio State (which had been very mediocre during 9-3 Earle Bruce Days. I believe he's the first coach to win a Rose Bowl as a Pac 10 HC and Big 10 HC.

duck-saying 5-19-2 in last 2 games of the season, after you already mentioned 2-10-1 and 3-8 was just redundant.
