View Full Version : Ignoring the playoff debate for a moment

I cannot imagine a two-team playoff plus bowl system format worse than this. The system's own rules do not produce any internally undisputed result and we miss out on many more interesting consolation matchups because of greed and bowl tie-ins. I would like to see Boise State and Ball State meet rather than watch each team play 7-5 BCS opponents. Texas Tech might be stuck playing an 8-4 Pac-10 team just because they are stuck in the wrong conference. I know that nonBCS teams may not want to shine a light on their second class status, but I don't see how it would hurt those leagues to setup a bowl for the top two teams that don't qualify for the BCS. Or perhaps, there can be a second-tier BCS and a third-tier. Even within the limitations of this system, why does this sport choose the worst ideas rather than the best ones?

Utah-boise would be fun to watch, but you're right that the bowl team selectors want one team to anchor sales and tv ratings. But maybe they are wrong in their thinking and one bowl when given the opportunity will buck the normal trend and choose 2 teams from outside of the 6 bcs conferences.
