View Full Version : Well, it looks like ...
Penn State is going to share the Big Ten championship but get the nod to the Rose Bowl. So, will it be USC or Oregon State? If you think the Oregon State game might be a total repeat dud like the first match earlier this year then you also need to be reminded of UCLA's win over Ohio State in 1975 when the Bucks crushed them earlier in the year, 41-20. Also Colorado losing to Texasa 41-7 in 2001 and then beating the Longhorns in the Big 12 title game. Virginia Tech vs. BC a couple of years ago in teh ACC title game, didn't Florida exact revenge on Auburn about 8 or so years ago in the SEC title game.
The Beavers bootstrapped themselves to beat USC two weeks after being crushed by the Nittany Lions in Happy Valley. If USC pulls it off then they're going to need to figure out a way to open it up on Penn State as Ohio State and Michigan State didn't/haven't scroed a TD on them yet. Lions know how to prepare for the post season. USC doesn't frieghten the blue collar types from that area where they hate everything other than a pork sausage and kraut and a Lutheran or Catholic church (ask our new leaders). Fortunately no Pac Ten officials will be doing this game as USC is a "dahling" and even the NCAA is anamoured with them. Now that is just gay. Imagine no Pac Ten officials in the Rose Bowl, Holiday Bowl or Sun Bowl. Might actually get a fair game called. Imagine that!

Must have been someone else...the only time we played Auburn in the SEC Championship game was in 2000 when we beat them for the title...and we beat them pretty good in the regular season as well in Gainesville. A pretty decent freshman QB named Rex Grossman was named MVP of the title game.

How about those classic Alabama vs. Florida title games in the earlier part of the '90s? I recall once the Gators beat an unbeaten Alabama for the SEC title, 28-21 (?) somewhere around '93 or so?

Yes, Florida and Alabama played in the first three SEC Championship Games, and four of the first five games - 92, 93, 94, and 96. Alabama won 28-21 in 1992 and went on to win the MNC that year. Florida handled them in the 1993 game and then also beat unbeaten Alabama 24-23 on a last minute TD drive in 1994. Florida beat Arkansas in the game in 1995 and then got Bama again in 1996, a 45-30 Gator win which propelled them to the Sugar Bowl and Spurrier's first and only MNC. They met again in 1999 and Bama clobbered us. I always enjoy playing Alabama...it's always a good clean hard-fought game. To date, the best run in Florida Football history was 1993-1996 when they won four straight SEC Championships and the MNC in 1996. I doubt you'll see any team rattle off four SEC Titles in a row anytime soon.
Thanks for the detailed information on that. Apparently you follow your Florida Gators as much as I do my Oklahoma Sooners. Question for you or anyone else who is deep into the SEC. I'm watching the tail end of the Ole Miss at LSU game. I'm truly impressed with the Rebels and with how Houston Nutt has given this team some serious beef and attitude. How young and or how deep is Ole Miss? Can they challenge Alabama for SEC West supremacy next year? LSU will always be in the thick of things but Ole Miss is definitely rising.

Not sure on their depth, but Ole Miss beat the last two BCS Champs, both on the road, this season...they beat Florida in The Swamp and LSU in Death Valley. With a win over Miss St next week, I believe they will finish 8-4 and might be in the Cotton Bowl. Houston Nutt is a solid coach.

Kind of like the NFL when divisional foes meet in the playoffs and one team has already beaten the other TWICE in the regular season but just can't muster three wins in a row over a good team....
