Its really simple

Take the TOP 6 CONFERENCE CHAMPS and have a 6 team playoff

If the season ended right now, here's what the BCS would look like:

Dec 20
#3 Penn State (Big 10 Champ) vs. #10 Boise State (WAC Champ) ~played in Happy Valley
#7 USC (PAC 10 Champ) vs. #8 Utah (Mountain West Champ) ~played in LA

Jan 1
Sugar Bowl: #1 Alabama (SEC Champ) vs. ____________ (lower seed)
Fiesta Bowl: #2 Texas Tech (Big XII Champ) vs. ____________ (higher seed)

Jan 8
National Championship Game

you'd still have the other BCS games as well

Orange Bowl: ACC Champ vs. Big East Champ
Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Texas
================================================== =======

whether or not anyone likes this idea or not, its time the BCS move towards a playoff setup...the fact that USC, Utah, and Boise State could completely get left out of a chance to play for the National Title is absurd. Thats pretty much ignoring the western region of the country...the fact that Penn State could get "Auburned" is horrid, and just exposes the huge flaw of the BCS...

There is some good football that is not being played...lets find a way to get these games on the table

And who is going to pick the Top 6 conferences? Computers? Coaches? Writers? Harris Poll?

This system wouldn't solve any problems really.

"it's time the BCS moves toward a playoff" ????? Nah, Evil. You can't have a BCS type arrangement do a sports championship. The governing body of the sport...the NCAA needs to control the post season and offer a playoff just like it does in every other sport including 3 CF divisions. The initials..'BCS', polls, bowls and all that stuff needs to be burried deep in the landfill and forgotten. That's the only way for big time CF to become a championship sport....'the change we need' :-). Of course it won't happen. That's why big time CF is labeled the 'Bowl Division' by the governing body...mythicalness and post season exhibition events rule. Take that 'B' out of BCS and you get 'Championship Series'...now that's a start, but the Bowl people are too powerful and the Presidents of the schools in the top 'show biz' / revenue leagues are in bed with them....so the 'B' will continue to stay in that moniker and there will be no legitimate championship.

you print out a copy of the last BCS rankings, you grab a highlighter, and you go down the list starting with #1, and you highlight every team thats a conference champ, and after you find six, you stop

the 1st two teams get byes, hosting in their respective bowls

IMO, if you don't win your conference, then you're not even the best team in your geographic region (which is what conferences are), and you have no business playing for a National Championship...of course, this goes against the grain of the current system somewhat, because the polls are heavily W-L based, but as you've seen with the Big 10 conference champs lately, you can have what appears to be two excellent teams, that really get maimed when they play the top teams from different parts of the country

Anyways, just my 2 cents

I would like to see some form of limited playoff

How good is USC this year? Utah? Boise State? you could have these teams go a combined 35-1, and not even be part of the National Championship process...thats not right IMO

Even the FCS uses rankings to seed the playoff teams, so use the BCS rankings to determine the playoff teams and their seeds. If you have 10 to 12 teams, then the top 4 BCS ranked teams can be rewarded with byes.

We can use the top bowl sites on a rotating basis as the playoff sites when we have 8 teams left or for all games if the first round games are played at neutral sites and not at the home field of the team with the better BCS ranking. This is not too radical as the champ game site is already on a 4-year rotation. With 8 to 12 teams it is unlikely that a desrved team is left out. What I am not certain of is whether it is better to re-seed after each playoff round but doing so would increase the reward for regular season success.

I posted this concept a few years ago on this board, but VODKA shot it down stating that playoff talk is somewhat fruitless.

EV,

This setup would never fly because you are excluding independents such as Notre Dame. Yes, they should join a conference...but they won't so we have to deal with them. In a 4, 6, or 8 team playoff, it cannot be limited to conference champs only. Now if you had an NCAA 16-team tournament that included ALL 11 conference champs + 5 at large bids, that would work if you want to give conference auto bids. An 8-team playoff with 6 conference champs + 2 at large bids could work as well. Either way, as long as there are independents, at large bids must be part of the equation IMO.

What if the #1, #2 and #3 teams in the final polls are all from the same conference, EV? That has actually happened!

The only playoff system that can produce an undisputed national champion is an NCAA-administered 16-team championship tournament.

I'm with GG & Herdfan. An inclusive 16 team, 15 game, 4 week championship is the best option.

VV, I'm not so sure the FCS uses 'rankings' exclusively to seed its championship. An NCAA selection and seeding committee does that in a meeting. Some of those guys might be aware of rankings but regional match-ups and travel have a bigger impact on the bracket configuration than 'rankings'.

In this scenario you can scratch USC from the list as OSU has the tiebreaker.
Therefore you have
Alabama, Texas Tech with byes
Penn St, Boise St, Utah, and Ball St as the other 6.
Don't think that will fly to well.
