Nittany Lions 1996

Attached is a post by "Crowbar" off the nittanyfootball.com site concerning the team's recent run in with the law again (sigh). I guess you could put this in the "tough love" department. The post is true. Let's face it, take away 2005, this decade has been a disaster. Four losing seasons. Then there is the 2002 team that lost 4 games with an NFL roster (Larry Johnson and company). Last year we were 9-4 with ZERO quality wins. To any UT fans out there, I acknowledge that you are a great team, with great traditions, but let's be realistic. Since you won the MNC 10 years ago, Fulmer has put the program on cruise control to the point where your team has been embarrassing in bowl games (see blow out losses to Clemson and Maryland). Hence why I am not surprised we beat UT for the third time in a bowl game this year. We still rock in bowl games, thank God.
Btw, this incident referenced stems from (allegedly) Anthony Scorotto having an altercation with some other students. After that he called a "posse" of football players and they went back to the apartment and started a fight. That makes a long story short.
Here is the post:
"Whether or not there are any convictions is irrelavant to me now. The damage is done no matter the outcome. Crap like this is a surefire recipe for a five loss season.
Quite frankly I am still pissed at these clowns for acting in this matter. Maybe, just maybe, if the jackass element that has encrusted itself on our team the last 7 years or so actually paid more attention to football instead of rounding up a posse to assault people, we would have a few more victories over Michigan since our last win over them in 1996. Maybe we wouldn't routinely embarrass ourselves in Columbus. Maybe we would win a big road game every once in a while. Maybe we would have more then one glorious season this decade.
Not saying all the PSU players are jerks. Not at all. No doubt 97% are first class citizens. But during this decade we have had quite a few thugs. And they have reeked havoc on the entire team. It's nauseating.
I wonder if some of the players think playing football for Penn State is their God given right instead of seeing it as a privilege and honor to play on one of college football's most tradition rich teams. Therefore not taking things as seriously as they should. 71,000 for an inter-scrimmage game should tell them how special playing for Dear Old State is. Most NFL games don't draw anywhere near that sort of attendance. Put all your heart into the game and the team or turn in your scholarship and leave.
Maybe Joe has lost some of the fear factor among the kids. I can't believe 20 years ago something like this happening. Can you image Shane Conlan rounding up a posse to get involved in a fight? They would fear what Joe would do, IMHO. The worst thing I remember reading about PSU from "back then" was Tom Bill's U/A drinking citation in 1988 and the fight a few players got into with students after the '88 Rutgers game. We all know the outcome of the 1988 season...
IMO, this season rests on the ND game. If we lose it that, coupled with these distractions, will cause the season to unravel. And quickly."
