Here's the tricky part. How to get ND into the Big 10 without really get them in as they want to be an Indy?

How about this idea? We form a coalition! between ND/AF/Navy. ND will play 4 of the Big 10 opponents, AF will play 2 and Navy will play the remaining 2 of the 8 Big 10 opponents. ND usually plays about 4 Big 10 teams anyway. AF and Navy would boost their OOC schedule with 2 Big 10 opponents per year (ON A HOME AND HOME BASIS).

In this way ND COULD never win the Rockne/Paterno Div as they would only play 4 games. ND would not share in the Conference Championship Game money OR the Bowl revenue which would still be split 11 ways. As it IS ND we are talking about I’m sure the NCAA would OK this plan. All 8 games would count as conference games for the 11 "real" members of the Big 10.

This scheme gets ND in without them giving up INDY status, it gives ND their 4 Big 10 games, it saves the traditional games, it gives all fans better games, it gives the Big 10 additional revenue through the Championship Game without having to split the money with ND, it helps out AF and Navy.

Maybe you can have your cake and eat it too.

so if ND doesn't get any extra $$, then what's their incentive for doing this?

They will be members in all other sports and can share those revenues.

They will be guaranteed FOUR Big 10 teams for the future (leverage) and better Big 10 opponents. They will be playing Mich, OSU and PSU (at least 2 of those each year).

They're already members in the Big East for other sports, plus they play Michigan, Purdue, and Mich St. every year...they're also playing Penn State this year

I like how the Big 10 looks in plan 1, but I just don't think ND would go for it

Ask ND how they liked their schedule in 2000? The Big 10 needs to tell ND that there will be NOT be MICH, MSU, and Purdue (which they have played for the past 5 years) games in the future UNLESS they agree.

You are guaranteeing them FOUR Big 10 teams instead of three and ND will be playing PSU,OSU and Mich (2 of 3 each year) plus 2 others. ND will still be able to play USC each year and can still schedule the other 7 games any way they want to!

Well, you'd have to make sure Purdue, Mich State, and Michigan were willing to give up their games vs. Notre Dame each year and avoid scheduling ND in the future if they say no...this might cause some conflict within the Big 10 office

Also, this can be taken as much a threat as an offer...there's too much pride at ND to go for this... and I think ND could simply replace the Big 10 opponents with other great teams around the country

First, ND doesn't play MSU and Mich every year: often, yes but not every year. As ND is in the same division as Purdue they will/can play every year.

Second, we swap MSU and Minn, Ill and NW, and Ind and Purdue.

Hayes/Schembechler Div ............Rockne/Paterno Div
OSU........................................PSU
Mich.......................................ND
Wisc.......................................MSU
Minn.......................................Iowa
Ill...........................................NW
Purdue....................................Ind

Third, we change the plan to play everyone in your division every year plus TWO traditional rivals from other division every year and the remaining four teams in other division rotate home and home.

Traditional rivals:

Hayes/Schembechler Div
For: OSU ...MSU and PSU
For: UM...ND and MSU (Paul Bunyan Trophy)
For: Wisc...NW and Iowa (Heartland Trophy)
For: Minn...Iowa (Floyd of Rosedale) and PSU (Governor's Victory Bell)
For: Ill... Ind and NW (Sweet Sioux Tomahawk)
For: Purdue...ND and Ind (Old Oaken Bucket)

Rockne/Paterno Div
For: PSU...OSU and Minn (Governor's Victory Bell)
For: ND...Purdue and UM
For: MSU...OSU and UM (Paul Bunyan Trophy)
For: Iowa...Minn (Floyd of Rosedale) and Wisc (Heartland Trophy)
For: NW... Wisc and Ill (Sweet Sioux Tomahawk)
For: Ind...Ill and Purdue (Old Oaken Bucket)

Also preserved are:
Mich-Minn (Little Brown Jug)
MSU-PSU (Land Grant Trophy)
Ill-Purdue (Purdue Cannon)
Minn-Wisc (Paul Bunyan's Axe)
OSU-Ill (Illibuck)
Ind-MSU (Old Brass Spittoon)
OSU-UM (no trophy)

Now, ND will play Purdue, MSU and Mich every year plus a fourth game.

A more likely scenario for Army and Navy is to each play two home and two away games against Big East foes becoming the defacto ninthe team for scheduling.
