View Full Version : Damned Florida....

Ohio State is having an absolutely awesome year in the major sports; made it to the NC game in football and with a win over Wisconsin will almost certainly be a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. But despite a #2 football rating and #3 basketball rating, Florida is #1 in both! Damn Gators!!!

If OSU beats Wisconsin (only tough game left), they easily have #1 seed, may even have it if they lose to Wisky, as their only losses would be to top 10 teams.
Gainesville is title city. Meyer and Donovan are easily the best combo at one school. OSU is second.

An NCAA basketball championship would be a nice recovery from the BCS championship game...

For Ohio State to have Tressel and Matta leading the football and basketball programs is wonderful and I am very happy regardless of who other schools have. Urban Meyer and Billy Donovan are very good coaches and Florida should do what ever it takes to keep them.

To have BOTH football and basketball so dominant at the same school. Both for OSU and UF. Have never really seen that before. You usually have your football schools and your basketball schools and they are different. The big bucks of Bball now, that actually eclipse football revenue in terms of post season payout, is what is likely forcing the change.

they're lucky to have two yankee coaches lead the way, one of who was referred to Urban Cryer last year, and Urban Whiner this yr.
Not that I have anything against UF other than living down here in south florida among many gator fans, but UF football has to be the luckiest thing in sports ever. lost to fsu in '96 and was put into position by Texas and OSU wins. 2006 voted ahead of Michigan after USC loss (hope you're still thanking that guy who intercepted Booty). I still think the whole controversy over who deserved to play takes some of the luster out of it all.
sorry, went off a bit...congrats still to UF. Great football and basketball teams.

Because it will not last forever. And I hope this doesn't sound like sour grapes but I don't see Florida repeating in basketball. I just see someone rising up and knocking off the defending national champs. No one has repeated since the early 1990's for a reason.

doc-who do you see in final four?

Doc

But lose while they're their...others...

UNC is very, very talented but could be a year away, I'll go with them in the Final 4.

I think Georgetown has an excellent shot if they get the right match-ups.

I don't like either of the strong Big East teams making it (Pitt or Marquette)

Ohio State or Wisconsin are good choices...

Kansas will get outcoached at some point...

The 4th team could be a surprise team like George Mason last year...

Lucky? OK, but they proved in both cases that they DESERVED to be there. They beat FSU 52-20 and beat OSU 41-14. That's 2 wins over the THEN #1 ranked teams by margins of 32 and 27 points. The BCS is lucky that they got it right in each case by putting UF in the games.

Scratch OSU from that list of final 4 teams. They dont have much "heart" they will get upset in the tourney by a team they have a substancial half time lead on. It's been a real trend with this team.

'96 was pre-BCS. Regardless, two teams winning (one being a major upset with texas beating nebraska) in order to put UF in position back then is definetely luck. Yeah, they showed up to play in the title game but thats besides the point. How often does a team get a rematch with a team they lost to at the end of the season for all the chips?

I'm not sure its a trend. They've had some close calls, but...they have 3 losses-all to top 10 teams. The only significant loss being UF early in the season...

In 1996, we beat unbeaten #1 FSU 52-20 on a neutral field after playing the NCAA-rated #1 schedule.

In 2006, we beat unbeaten #1 Ohio St 41-14 on a neutral field (actually 75% OSU fans) after playing the NCAA rated #1 schedule.

To even pretend that the 96 or 06 Florida Football SEC Championship teams were not deserving of their mythical national championships is nonsense.

And so what if we don't repeat in hoops this year. We've got as good a shot as any, but in a single-elimination tournament anything can happen. Of course, if we play Ohio St for all of the marbles again in hoops, I would certainly like our chances given the blowout win over OSU we had in December.

Winning it all again in hoops would only be icing on the cake. The fact that we're the only school in THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE ATHLETICS to own the basketball AND football titles at the same time pretty much makes my career as a college sports fan. I doubt we'll see this happen again in our lifetime.

Florida has done something that has never been accomplished and I for one recognize that and tip my hat to those teams...they were magnificent.

I just think that someone is going to rise up (like Vandy today) and knock them off before they repeat...that's all. And if OSU and Florida do match-up in the NCAA, obviously the Gators would be the clear favorite to win that game. Have I kissed enough butt, yet?

nice that you mention Vandy Doc, as they beat UF today.

GGrad- NCAA rated #1 SOS? let's see a link to that. I remember OSU beating 3 top 5 teams that year (ND, PSU and ASU).

Doc - how does Vandy beating Florida (hats off to Vandy by the way...they played a great game and deserved to win today) "knock" Florida out of National Championship contention? Last I checked, it's all about the NCAA Tournament.

Florida was better than FSU in 1996, but still incredibly lucky it was pre-BCS. ASU would have been playing FSU for the title otherwise.

Go to the 3rd page of that PDF document.

Prior to Florida '96, the only other National Title winners to have NCAA-rated #1 strength of schedules...Colorado '90 and Penn St '94. Of course, as the link above shows, Florida did it again in '06.

I'm not sure what the point is. What champion does NOT have at least a little bit of luck on the road to a championship? Championships occur when opportunity meets the will and ability to take advantage of that opportunity. Florida got their opportunities in both 96 and 06 and took full advantage of them showing why they deserved to be called National Champs. Both teams had one loss which was accepted due to their #1 NCAA-rated SOS...as SEC Champions, both teams dominated previously unbeaten #1 teams: FSU 52-20 in 96, and OSU 41-14 in 06. Lucky? Sure. Deserving? Of course.

As for 96, maybe if the Big Ten and PAC 10 weren't too stubborn and joined the Bowl Alliance, ASU wouldn't have been left out of the picture and wouldn't have been forced to play in the Rose Bowl. Not our fault.
