Since I-A was established in 1978, 24 schools have played in bowl games that produced an AP or Coaches Poll national champion. Only four of these teams did not win a title of their own. Name them.

OK, I am doing this by no cheating. All of the top of my head.
I have to believe some Rose Bowl matchups cause this. One has to be Wazzu vs Michigan in 97. So Wazzu is one.
Virginia Tech vs Flordia Stae. VPI is 2.
Who did BYU play in the Holiday Bowl the year they won it (1984)? They have the be 3.
I have no clue for the fourth. But I suspect a Rose Bowl matchup. I'll guess Iowa.

So I cheated and looked up BYU's opponent who happened to be Michigan. So That's out. I still feel confident with Wazzu and VPI.....
WVU would be another one. They played ND in the Fiesta in 1988 (or 89) and then played UF in the Sugar around '93 or so. Both would've probably lead to at-least a share of the title. So we have VT in 99 or 2000, Wazzu in '97, WVU and .....????
---
edit WVU and the Sugar Bowl circa '93. I understand the question better.
After racking my brain a bit, I think the final answer would be Pitt. They lost to UGA in '81 I think and won the National Title in 1976 (or '77) before the split, but not after. So I guess the final answer would be: Pitt, WVU, VT, Wazzu.
Name the 24 schools:
Clemson
Nebraska
Georgia Tech
ND
Miami
Alabama
FSU
Florida
Michigan
LSU
USC
Colorado
BYU
Penn State
Oklahoma
Washington
Georgia
Tennessee
Texas
???
---
Pitt
Wazzu
WVU
VT
I'm missing one school? I can't figure out which champion I'm missing? Help me out.

LOL! You forgot the best one....
What year did Clemson win it?
Clemson won in all in 1981 (1982 Orange Bowl; the New Year Bowl games always screw up getting the year right).

West Virginia, Washington State, and Virginia Tech are correct. The fourth team has not been mentioned.

After looking it up, it's Arkansas, losing to Alabama in the 1980 Sugar Bowl. Alabama being the 79 MNCs.
Pitt played UGA in the Sugar the year after UGA won their MNC. Pitt won that game, BTW....
