View Full Version : As exciting as this regular season was

How does the manner in which Ohio State and LSU reached the title game not cheapen the whole thing more than a playoff ever would? I'm not disputing the two participants, but I often hear those opposed to a playoff argue that it will allow an "undeserving" team to just get hot. Even so, two teams would have to just get hot versus three top 16/conference champions to reach the title game. Yet, at the concluison of the BCS' regular season playoff, we have one team that is 0-1 versus top 16 competition and another that is 2-0 (which is less than what a team that just gets hot would need to do) and has lost two games to teams that would not make a playoff. On top of that, neither team played their way into the title game. Seems obvious to me that OSU-LSU would have a more exciting feel to it if both teams won three playoff games to get there rather than lose their next to last game and watch a six or seven teams blow a similar opportunity.

Good post CJ. I find this funny: The week before the LSU vs Ole Miss game, all the BCS supporters were saying- "With a playoff the LSU vs Ole Miss and Arkansas games would mean nothing, as they would already have qualified to play for the CCG. Now, they have a 3 game playoff stretch where a loss ends their chance. With a playoff, the Arkansas vs LSU game would be meaningless."
That is what the BCS supporters said. We don't have a playoff. And obviously the Arkansas game was still meaningless.

Another argument I find humorous are those who like the controversy and wonder what we have to talk about if there were a playoff. Yep, I'm sure these boards would be dead if Saturday were the start of 16 team playoff. Hey, remember that game back in October when Kentucky beat LSU in triple overtime? That game means nothing now if there is a playoff.

Wholeheartedly agree. I've said the same forever. Most teams would have to do more in a month than they do in a complete season now. I think the current set up is also showing the "elite" BCS programs that they really don't have to schedule anybody out of conference to get to the national title game. OSU is a prime example of that this year. And I feel that it will only get worse as the years go by if the system doesn't change.
I also see a trend with the "elite" BCS teams that it is easier to lose to a non-traditional unranked team(s) than historically well regarded teams. It seems that a LSU can lose to a Kentucky, OSU to Illinois, USC to Stanford, OU to TT, etc. and the media just sweeps it under the rug as a fluke. But heaven forbid if a legit contender, like VT and Mizzou, happens to go down to the likes of LSU and Boston College or a OU twice, the same media uses those losses to "prove" that those type of teams don't deserve a chance to be "picked" into a national title game.

The fact is that OSU was penalized for their schedule. if OU, Mizzou, WVU, VT, Oregon, USC or virtually any other BCS team had 1 loss then OSU was on the outside. Kansas had a schedule far worse than OSU and they paid the price for having the single loss.
I agree that a playoff would be far more exciting but you listen to the powers that be and it simply is not going to happen. That being the case we have to live with what we have.

Yep, if an 8 team playoff was set, with only 6 conference champs and 2 at large bids, then the conference races would be HUGE! And more games would be meaningful, as an early season loss would no longer doom a team.

All conferences should be the same so each team has the same shot. You argue over which system is right. The AFC doesnt have a different set of rules from the NFC. And they determine a Champion every year.
