Machen sure is right.......it would take a politically powerful league like the SEC to lead the way. Remember, Roy Kramer and the SEC basically founded the mythical BCS $hit, so it would be great if the SEC could do a 180* shift and lead big time CF towards being a championship sport.
But don't hold your breath. The SEC makes zillions from the exhibition system. Until it can be convinced that sending one ( sometimes two ) teams to a championship will result in more revenue than sending 6-8 teams to PSEGs, annually, nothing will change.

But the SEC ***CAN*** still send 6-8 teams to the post season! Think about basketball. The only difference is that 1-2 teams will be in the NCAA playoff and 5-7 will be in the NIT tournament (AKA smaller bowls). Remember that there are about 26 bowls out there that want teams. Let's say the 7 bowls are tied up with an 8 team playoff. That still leaves 19 bowls that are looking for teams.

"The Big Ten and the Pac-10, with a strong Rose Bowl tie-in, figure to be the conferences least eager to rally support for a college football playoff."
...did you read this in the article?

The BCS was first and foremost created to break the lock on the Rose Bowl, so there could be a somewhat legitimate national championship game

hmmmm....see a progression of ideas here?...first 1 game, then maybe, say 4?
IMO, thats the next step

How much do you wanna bet that the Rose Bowl ISN'T one of the bowls attending the meeting in Destin?

I see it the same way you do. I don't think Roy was a great guy but I do believe/hope that he got the ball at least starting to roll towards a playoff.
