a championship of their own. By this I don't mean a playoff or removing themselves from BCS consideration, but rather agreeing to a set of rules for determining a champion amongst their own. These rules should be completely objective and open to the public. The idea is to promote their teams, give their teams and fans another championship to shoot for, and ultimately promote a system they believe should apply to all of college football. Perhaps they could even get a corporate sponsor for their "league" championship. This championship may also enhance the bowls they have ties with. Perhaps they will adopt rules that most fans, even BCS school fans, will come to prefer to the BCS formula. I can't imagine a reason for not creating a championship to promote their idea of how things should be for all.

the BCS would love this idea. the nonBCS schools dividing themselves and further enhancing the divide between the haves and have nots. the Liberty Bowl did a pretty decent job matching two nonBCS teams from C-USA and the Mountain West. just a few years ago when Utah qualified for the Fiesta, the Boise State/Louisville Liberty bowl was one of the best bowl of the year with two nonBCS schools. but this has been kicked to the curb because these bowls don't feel the can live without a BCS school participating in their bowls. just the mindset the BCS started out with its inception in 1998.

...better yet, the non BCS schools join the NCAA D1 Championship division and let the greedy BCS schools have their little exhibition post season and phony baloney championship.

Thats what I was about to say...it would certainly substantiate the playoff, and put it on the map...as it is now, the playoff is an after thought (unless you're one of those Delaware fans....)

People want a playoff...there already IS a playoff

Why would the BCS schools love this? NonBCS schools would not be separating themselves any more than they already are. All this idea does is create a championship among nonBCS schools governed by rules such schools would like to see replace the BCS formula. Under it, Boise State still goes to the BCS. As it stands, nonBCS teams will always be second class if they don't at least attempt to improve their situation. The idea here is for nonBCS schools to imagine they ran college football. If so, what rules would they play by? Unless they agree to rules that are as inherently worthless as the BCS formula, I don't see how the publicity from doing this could do anything but help.

i agree that the nonBCS schools are treated like 2nd class citizens, but having a playoff or whatever between the nonBCS schools will make them 3rd class citizens. and how are the nonBCS schools "tournament" going to gain legitimacy if their best team is off playing in a BCS bowl?

the BCS does everything in its power to keep schools like Utah and Boise from making the BCS as it already is. and if these schools decided to join some conglomerate don't you think the BCS will do everything in their power to exclude them even more? no point in dividing the line between the have and have not even more unless ESPN, CBS, etc. are willing to offer the nonBCS schools television contracts that are on par with the BCS ones. and we all know that will never happen. so just let the nonBCS schools keep chopping wood. 2-0 vs. the Big Boys the last 3 years ain't a bad start.

I'm not proposing a nonBCS playoff or anything affecting their current place in the BCS. I'm simply suggesting that they create, in addition to what is in place, a championship for their own teams governed by rules they would like to see replace the BCS formula. Think of the nonBCS teams as a 54 team conference whereby the top ranked team following bowl games is the "league" champion. Bascially, the nonBCS title race could be like all of I-A was before the BCS except that objective rules rather than polls would determine the champion. Ultimately, the goal here is to adopt and promote rules that will hopefully be embraced by all college football fans while simutaneously promoting their own programs and creating another championship to pursue. And if this idea attracts a corporate sponsor, it would help these schools financially. I see no downside. Short of suing BCS schools, nonBCS teams will never get a fair shake. Therefore, why not create an equitable system for your own kind with the goal of attracting public support for it over the BCS formula?

Agree - adding those 60 + bowl division 'mids' to the championship division would substantiate the playoffs.....big time. Delaware seems to be on the decline. Don't know what's wrong up there since we smoked the field for the 03 national championship.
Got to tell ya, evil, I'm excited about Sept.8. I'll be down in Baton Rouge for the LSU/VT game.....my first ever Tiger Stadium experience !!!
