Redundant I know, but I sometimes I wonder why I bother reading most message boards. I just cannot understand how the brains of most college football fans work if they do at all. Once again, USC is the greatest college football team ever and their perceived talent matters more than the fact that they STILL lost to Stanford and their OOC opponents finished 9-27 thereby giving them a poor overall schedule. Even the media is kissing their butts by calling them the "hottest" team in college football due their three game win streak versus Oregon State, California, and Arizona State. And then there are the fans that continue to believe who the best team (most talent/ability) is matters. Look at the quote below taken from another site. How can anyone be this stupid? This is an example of another fan that thinks what you put on the field matters more than what you accomplish with it. Florida is more deserving (another useless word) than Missouri or West Virginia because they are a better team despite their superior talent being worth two more losses?

After the season is over will we know who the best team is? Looks like West Virginia will be in the NC game against Mizzou or Ohio State. Both of these teams had weak schedules. I still think LSU, USC, and even Florida are more deserving. Would love to see these teams battle it out for the NC. Thoughts?

I know what you mean CJ. It's called the irrational fan, and we even see it displayed by the pundits on TV and in the newspapers. No matter what has happened previous, they watch a team win a game by a large margin and suddenly that team is the unbeatable, undisputed #1 team. Look at how many "it" teams we have had this year. And it doesn't take much. After Florida had lost 2 games in a row, they beat Kentucky in Lexington. All of sudden several people were claiming that Florida was the most feared team in football, it boggled my mind.
What gets me the most is how people can claim that 1, 2, or even 3 loss teams are not only unbeatable, but that they would beat another team of equal merrit by 10-20 points.

You would think people would learn after all the incredible upsets we have had over the course of the season. But I am sure that after seeing WVU put up 60+ yesterday, that some idiots out there will proclaim WVU to be the newest unbeateable "it" team. They just never learn.

After reading thousands of forum posts over the years at lots of different sites, it is my opinion that,in general, fans of FCS football have higher IQs than fans of FBS football............which, I know, is only somewhat related to your point, CJH.

You said it better than I did. Sure, USC may have gotten healthy and may have fixed what was broken, but I just find it amusing that they or anyone else is suddenly invincible despite previous losses and would beat X, Y, or Z by 50 points if the two teams played. 12 unranked teams have beaten top 5 teams this year and fans still guarantee that Team A would beat Team B by 50 if they met and this is reason enough to rank Team A higher.

It's the disease and the only reason we don't see that as bad here is we have so many posters that bring objectiveness and sanity to fight the disease. The disease is, of course, that perception is reality, which is a fundamental human failing.

What are you talking about? It is common knowledge that this is the 6 pete for USC. Even Mark May was talking about how USC is playing some of the best football.

But they lost two games and that's all that matters....in this system. They are thus not even remotely "deserving"....a term I have yet to understand the meaning of.

Excellent 1st two post Hawkeye and Bucky.

Blue Hen, I think it has more to due with the football factory type of schools represents the "peoples" pride in their home state. I'd be willing to bet most fans of schools like OSU, LSU, 'Bama, Nebraska, Texas, Tennessee, etc. have never taken a class at any of these schools. Hence, they're really not representatives of the actual school they claim, they're more the mouthpiece of the guy next door that you'd kind of roll your eyes at when they're spouting off the same stuff at the local barber shop.

Comes down to brainwashing and resistance to brainwashing. For all you posters who are part of the brainwashing resistance.....keep up the good fight ! This is a much better than average forum and I think we can, eventually, get all our friends around here to quit thinking 'mythically' about college football......although it might be a little less fun...hhhmmmmm.

I'd guess that a lot of the people that talk about, for example, "Florida being more deserving" are the people that think that by wishing for a playoff it will somehow come true between now and the 2nd week of January. Ok, that was a bit over the top, but you know what I'm driving at.

wrong or right. right or wrong. fair or not. College football's playoff is currently its regular season.

Turning some folks' arguments or their ears, why should injuries only be a negative factor in the fall and not in January? I mean I constantly hear that Booty's been injured and "if there were a playoff, look out for USC." I tend to agree, but what if Pat White gets injured at practice in January? Then you'd hear, "if we only had a healthy White..." Unfortuantely, the old, tired saying is true. Injuries are part of the game.

CJ, today I heard something on a Columbus OHIO radio station that just slayed me. Keep in mind, this is in Columbus. The quote went something like, "....but there's really no doubt that LSU is still the best team in the country..." Where do these people come from? (disclaimer: yes, LSU is still a good football team)

SH,

The LSU quote is a prefect example. They say stuff like that as if it matters even if true.

Good post CJ. During the preseaon, I said no matter what happens this year, by seasons end, USC will once again be the 5-peat "shoulda been" champions. Every year other than 04 fans have said USC was really the best team and should've been champion. Looks like we are headed down the same road. We are one Rose Bowl USC blowout win away from USC winning it's 5th "Shoulda Been National Championship".

I was wrong. The official "it" team of the moment according to the irrational fan is USC. The Trojans are now the team that would beat anybody in their way, ..........................well except for Stanford.

I guess I missed this thread somehow last night. I also figured the USC "is the best team, the team that no one wants to play right now" would come up again at year's end. OK, so is Pete Carrol overrated to coach so poorly with the nation's best team every year or are these fans just nuts?

I believe it's the latter but I also believe the former should be considered as well.

USC is the five time defending team BEST TEAM in college football. Too bad the trophy reads CHAMPION.

Ha ha. I called in August. No matter what happened this year, and this has been THE wildest year ever, USC would still end up as the team that "shoulda been" champions. Look for sc69er to show back up anytime to confirm that.

If USC blows out someone in the Rose Bowl, and there is an ugly winner of the NC game, look for all offseason USC folks claiming that 5th "Shoulda Been Championship".

I found another dumb college football fan. This one argued that the BCS ranking system is a complete failure because Missouri is an underdog to Oklahoma this coming weekend. This is another example of a fan that "thinks" differently when it comes to college football than he does with regard to any other sport. For example, are the NFL standings a complete failure if Vegas regards a lower place team as a favorite in an upcoming game? I'm beginning to think that Zoombag is right when he refers to such thinking among college football fans as a disease. What else could explain such stupidity?

BTW, the BCS formula is horrible, but this fan's reason for thinking so is even worse.
