What is worse. Michigan losing the Appalachian St or Alabama losing to La Monroe. Appy St is a 2 defending champion in D1AA and is 66 in sagarin. La Monroe has a losing record and is 104 in sagarin. Not that I would ever defend Michigan but that have been rode hard all year for the loss to Appy St but not much was made of the Alabama loss.

Both are horrible losses that should never happen. Period.

And it isnt like the Minny-ND State loss where Minny got beat by everyone in the BT. Bama has 2 very close losses to the West champ LSU and possible East champ Georgia.

Granted, this game was the season for UL-Monroe and 'Bama probably looked ahead because they NEED to beat Auburn at some point. But still......

It would have made bigger news if this season hadn't been completely full of unbelievable upsets. When i saw Bama lose to UL-Monroe, I thought to myself 'Well, of course they did'.

Highest paid coach in I-A loses to the lowest paid coach in I-A.

Well, as time goes on the Michigan loss will be percieved as worse simply becaue of the "1-AA" label Appy has instead of the "1-A" label ULM has. But, if Appy and UL Monroe played tomorrow....I take App St!

Plus, I think Michigan is better than Bama right now anyway, so it makes their upset a little more shocking.

After Alabama lost to Louisiana-Monroe, it got me remembering that this has happened to Alabama quite frequently so I did a little research. It's amazing just home many times since 1997 that Alabama has been upset by teams that were scheduled by Alabama to be "easy" wins. I realize that in some of these years Alabama was on probation but even an Alabama on probation shouldn't lose this many times to schools like this. Here is the list of the big-time upsets of Alabama since 1997.

11-1-1997 Louisiana Tech 26, Alabama 20 in Tuscaloosa
9-18-1999 Louisiana Tech 29, Alabama 28 in Birmingham
9-16-2000 Southern Miss 21, Alabama 0 in Birmingham
10-28-2000 Central Florida 40, Alabama 38 in Tuscaloosa
9-20-2003 Northern Illinois 19, Alabama 16 in Tuscaloosa
11-29-2003 Hawaii 37, Alabama 29 in Honolulu
11-17-2007 Louisiana-Monroe 21, Alabama 14 in Tuscaloosa

Obviously, Southern Miss is a quality program but it's still a C-USA school beating the all-time best school in SEC history. Hawaii was scheduled for two years in Hololulu as an Alabama reward game while the Crimson Tide was ineligible for Bowl Games. Hawaii was OK in 2003 but not like they are today. Central Florida was also not the UCF from C-USA that we know today. It's one thing to lose one of these games in a decade (Memphis over Tennessee for example) but to lose seven of these since 1997 is incredible.

To make things even worse is the fact that Alabama's mens basketball team lost to Belmont on Monday night too.

..and bj, it's even worse when Alabama steps outside the relative safety of the SEC and plays teams from other BCS leagues. In the BCS era, Bama has only won 3 of 12 games vs OOC BCS peers (.250)

Yet, some SEC types tell us how difficult Alabama makes their schedules. Bama doesn't scare anybody except SEC teams.

I think the worst is USC losing to Stanford. ~40 point favorites. USC #1 at the time.
