A Very interesting read...Shows just how many more people watch college football vs college basketball. Also, shows just how far away college football is from going to a playoff format. Until people stop watching, they'llnever do it.
"Last weekend, 3.9 million people turned on CBS to watch No. 1 Ohio State play No. 2 Wisconsin. It was the biggest television audience for a college basketball game this season. Back in November, 4.7 million viewers turned on CBS to watch No. 16 Georgia Tech play unranked Georgia in what was the fifth-most watched college football game of the day"

As Mike and the Mad Dog said on their WFAN radio show last week, when it comes to college basketball, the NCAA is reaping what it has sewn.
''They created this,'' Mike Francesa said. ''They created a 17-day season.''
The college football post season could be better, no doubt....but the college basketball regular season blows...
And I still don't get the college basketball conference tournaments...where the worst team in the conference could technically win...

The college basketball season isn't hurt by the NCAA tournament, but rather because not enough emphasis is placed on it. It also doesn't help that teams are playing "blind". No one knows how much a game means in the grand scheme of things because there are no rules. Just as I have argued for CFB, CBB needs to adopt a single objective ranking system. Furthermore, it might help the regular season if the top 16 teams get to host the first two rounds. Upsets in the tournament are great, but parity has made it too easy to knock a top four seed on a neutral court. Imagine tournament locks playing their conference tournaments with homecourt advantage on the line.

yeah, it's so meaningful that 54% of the teams advance to post season play.

College basketball's regular season is not diminished by the 64 team playoff, but rather by the manner in which the regular season is used to determined playoff participants. When six conferences account for half of the playoff teams, it becomes too easy for those teams to qualify. However, for argument's sake, if CBB were divided into 16 20-team leagues and four teams fromeach league advance to the playoffs with regular season league champions hosting the first two rounds, it becomes more difficult to make the playoffs for everyone and a strong season means more than a high seed on a neutral court that will have fans of other teams cheering against you.
The point isn't that this setup is practical for CBB. It is just to show that the importance of the regular season can be enhanced and that the 64 team playoff isn't the primary reason it "blows". As such, I don't think CCB's diminished regular season is an argument against a college football playoff.

Yeah, the NCAA basketball regular season is as boring and uninspiring as anything I watch. Unless you are an alumni or student of the school, it's hard to get passionate about it. December any year, Duke beats UNC or Michigan beats Illinois......so what. Doesn't matter. Really. Conference tourney is only time is starts to matter.
